In Pursuit Of Excellence - Sunderland Football Team

Sunderland A. F. C. Is an established football club having formed in 1879, including a history of having won 6 First Division Titles since 1892 to 1936. With a large fan base and its transformation, the team boasts a number of skilled and talented players. Having competed at the Stadium of Light able to house over 48 000 people, this formidable team continues to grow from strength to strength.

The original games took place at the Roker Park in 1997 from a capacity of approximately 42 000 to 49 000 after a number of modifications were performed to accommodate fans. The club has been transformed after a number of misfortunes including financial difficulties. It has gone on to win 3 cup finals with a major trophy win against Leeds United in 1973.

The year 1990 was considered a troublesome period; however, 1995 marked a turnaround for the club with the experience and expertise of manager, Paul Reid. It was 1999 that saw the club return as champions of the First Division having accumulated over 100 points. The team managed to defeat Chelsea 4-1 after an initial defeat of 4-0 between 1999 and 2000.

It was the year 2005 that saw the team become champions for the third time in the divisional championships. After a sudden dip, A. F. C, slowly began to gain recognition for its efforts in 2007 where it steadily moved up the score boards. Having changed managers a number of times, the familiarity, strength, and fan base for this club remain consistent.

In 2013 the players experienced great luck with a change in management marked by their defeat against major leagues such as Manchester City, Everton, and Newcastle. Guus Poyet as the appointed manager during this time assisted the club in reaching the Capital One Cup Final in over 21 years with a penalty shootout against Manchester United. With the team having moved forward in its game play and reputation, there are more things to come that can be summed up by its motto, Consectatio Excellentiae, that means "In the Pursuit of Excellence".
